Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the smell, the food, Halloween, pumpkins, leaves, I could go on and on! One of our favorite fall activities is apple picking. We are fortunate to live in walking distance from an awesome apple orchard.
There are so many great ways to use apples this time of year, but my favorite and most ridiculously easy way is crockpot applesauce. You can throw all the ingredients into the pot and leave it for a few hours and come home to the best smell imaginable. I used to make applesauce in my classroom every year to celebrate Johnny Appleseed and the kids always loved it.
Ella loves helping with this recipe since she can pretty much do everything on her own, aside from peeling the apples. I have a really great kid-friendly chopping knife that we use in the girls Waldorf class for chopping apples. Ella started using it before she turned 2.
For this recipe all you will need is:
- 1 dozen apples (you can use more and freeze the applesauce)
- cinnamon to taste (I let Ella use as much as she wants)
- 1 c water
-1/4 c maple syrup (optional)
1. Peel apples and chop in to large chunks
2. Put apples, cinnamon, and water in crockpot and stir
3. High 3-4 hours Low 5- hours
4. Mash any large chunks once applesauce is done and viola!
